  • The Bow.  Calgary, Canada The Bow is the most recognizable building in the Calgary skyline. It is at least for now, the tallest building outside of Toronto – not just western Canada. The Bow is as a 58 story 778 foot crescent shaped skyscraper. This project was proposed in 2006 by Encana, a leading oil and gas producer in Calgary.

Construction started in the summer of 2007 and also in 2007, Encana sold the project to H & R REIT and signed a 25 year lease to occupy the entire building when it was complete housing nearly 3,200 employees. The Bow was completed in 2012 and cost over 1 billion dollars to build.  There are 6 below grade floors, 49 elevators, 6 escalators and 1,360 parking spaces in the project.

Stretching across two city blocks, The Bow is an enormous project holds the record for having the largest continuous foundation concrete pour in Canadian history. The Bow used 43,000 tons of structural steel and 83,000 m2 (900,000 ft2) of glass. The concrete pour took place over the course of three shifts, involved 500 people, and simultaneously required between 75 and 95 concrete trucks pouring continuously. Through careful building orientation, the tower is able to harness the power of the sun to heat and cool the structure. Its signature “bow” shape vastly reduces wind resistance, increases exposure to sunlight, and allows for more windows to be incorporated into its design.

The Bow has received several awards of distinction, including the 2012 National Steel Design Award, being named one of Azure magazine's Top 10 Projects of 2012, named to Emporis' World's Most Spectacular Corporate Buildings, ranked in the top five of the Best Skycrapers in the World by Emporis in 2013, and being recognized as The Best Tall Building: Americas by The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.
